In this guide
Tirupati, in Andhra Pradesh, is one of India's most-visited temple towns. Millions of travellers arrive each year to visit the Sri Venkateswara Temple atop the Tirumala hills. This guide covers the practical side of the trip — getting to Tirupati, travelling up to Tirumala, and making the most of your time in the region.
How to Reach Tirupati
By Air
Tirupati Airport at Renigunta is about 15 km from the city and has flights from major Indian cities. From the airport, a pre-booked cab is the easiest way into Tirupati or straight up to Tirumala. We offer doorstep airport pickups with clean AC vehicles.
By Train
Tirupati Main Railway Station is well-connected to Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and other cities, and is right in the heart of town. A local taxi from the station can take you to your hotel or up the ghat road.
By Road
Tirupati is an easy road trip from several southern cities. The most popular routes are:
- Chennai to Tirupati — about 135 km (~3 hours), an easy same-day trip.
- Bangalore to Tirupati — about 250 km (~5 hours) via Kolar and Chittoor.
- Hyderabad to Tirupati — about 560 km (~9–10 hours) via Kurnool.
Getting Around Tirupati & Up to Tirumala
Tirumala sits about 22 km uphill from Tirupati, reached by a well-maintained ghat road. You can travel up by bus or by private cab — a cab is far more comfortable for families, elderly travellers and groups carrying luggage. Within Tirupati city, local taxis are the simplest way to move between the station, hotels and nearby attractions.
For larger groups, a Force Urbania (12 or 16 seater) keeps everyone together for the journey up the hill and around town. If you'd rather have the whole trip arranged for you — pickup, hotel and travel — see our Tirumala travel package.
Best Time to Visit
Tirupati can be visited year-round, but the cooler, drier months from October to February are the most pleasant for travel, especially the climb to Tirumala. Summers (March–June) are hot, so an early-morning start helps. The monsoon (July–September) brings green hills and fewer crowds, with occasional rain on the ghat road. For a deeper seasonal breakdown, read our guide on the best time to visit Tirumala.
Where to Stay
You can base yourself in Tirupati city, which has the widest choice of hotels and is convenient for travel connections, or stay in Tirumala to be close to the hill temple. Both work well depending on your plans. If you book our travel package, we help coordinate comfortable AC accommodation as part of the trip.
Temples & Sightseeing Nearby
Beyond the main Tirumala temple, the region has several well-known temples worth adding to your itinerary:

- Srikalahasti Temple — about 36 km away, famous as a Vayu (wind) kshetra.
- Kanipakam Vinayaka Temple — roughly 75 km from Tirupati.
