Across the Pamban bridge, where the road seems to float on the sea, waits the island of Rama's own Jyotirlinga — Char Dham, corridor of a thousand pillars, and twenty-two wells whose water pilgrims carry home. It is the longest pilgrimage we run from Tirupati, and the one travellers remember most vividly.
The classic 3-day shape: day one to Madurai with the evening at Meenakshi Amman; day two over the Pamban bridge for the teertham baths and Jyotirlinga, with Dhanushkodi at sunset; day three the long road home. A fourth day converts the dash into a pilgrimage with breathing room — many families add it after hearing the day-two plan in full.
The Jyotirlinga installed, by tradition, by Lord Rama — and the immense third corridor whose pillared perspective is one of India's great architectural sights.
The sacred wells bathed from in sequence before the sanctum — brisk, soaking and joyful. A change of clothes rides in the cab.
The sea crossing itself — road bridge above, the historic rail bridge alongside, fishing boats threading the channel below.
The cyclone-stilled ghost town at land's end, where the road runs out between two seas at Arichal Munai. Best in late-afternoon light.
Most pilgrims pair the island with Madurai's Meenakshi Amman — the natural overnight break on this road — and the grander week-long version of this journey is our South India temple circuit.
The 3-day plan arrives as one written amount, driver allowances included.
